Mission
OMA.CCMAR’s mission is to strengthen cooperation between science, industry and municipalities, enabling organisations to translate ESG principles into concrete strategies, practices and investments. Grounded in CCMAR’s research and monitoring capacity, OMA.CCMAR supports decarbonisation, resource efficiency and the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, helping the Algarve build a more resilient, competitive and future-proof coastal economy.
Principles
-
Science-based: Every action, solution and recommendation is grounded in robust scientific data.
-
Sustainability-driven: We promote sustainability in its full scope: environmental, social and economic.
-
Business-focused: We translate science and sustainability into tangible value and competitiveness for organisations.
-
Collaboration & ESG alignment: We connect companies, research organisations and municipalities, guided by ESG, to enable cooperation that accelerates decarbonisation.
-
Innovation-led: We see innovation (scientific, technological and organisational) as the engine of sustainability and long-term performance.
-
Measurable impact: We design initiatives to deliver clear, reportable and measurable outcomes.
-
Transparency & trust: We ensure decisions and communication are evidence-based and credible, rooted in science.
History
The Algarve Marine Observatory (OMA.CCMAR) was established by CCMAR to meet a growing need for stronger cooperation between science, the tourism/hotel sector and municipalities, especially as organisations face increasing ESG expectations and the urgency to decarbonise.
OMA.CCMAR was designed as a network of excellence that aligns CCMAR’s research and monitoring capacity with business and public decision-making turning knowledge into practical solutions for resource efficiency, emissions reduction and healthier coastal ecosystems.

Sustainability
Ocean sustainability is not just an environmental commitment it is a strategic driver of competitiveness, resilience and quality of life in the Algarve. At OMA, we turn scientific knowledge into decisions, action and measurable results.
Relevance
The Algarve is a coastal region where the ocean is a real asset: it supports tourism, local economies, cultural identity and community safety.
At the same time, pressure is rising: climate change, coastal erosion, biodiversity loss, pollution and intensive resource use.
Responding requires more than good intentions: it takes strategy, cooperation and applied science.
Why this matters for organisations
-
Reduces operational and reputational risk
-
Anticipates ESG and reporting expectations
-
Protects natural capital that sustains business (beaches, ecosystems, environmental quality)

Value
Sustainability creates value when it is implemented well, when it improves performance, strengthens trust and delivers real impact.
At OMA.CCMAR, sustainability translates into:
-
Efficiency and cost reduction (energy, water, waste, operations)
-
Resilience and risk management (coastal adaptation, nature-based solutions, prevention)
-
Differentiation and reputation (credible, evidence-based communication)
-
Partnership and funding readiness (projects with clear metrics and reportable outcomes)
-
People and place engagement (collaboration, citizen science, capacity-building)
The goal is simple: a healthier ocean and a stronger coastal economy at the same time.
