Highlights
Moments that reflect the impact of our work and the people who make it possible
National Sustainability Day
On 25 September, we launched the “6 Months, 6 Events” series with the celebration of National Sustainability Day 2025.
Held at the Grand Auditorium of the University of Algarve, this first event brought together science, society and businesses to reflect on key issues for the future of the ocean, from the management of the invasive macroalga Rugulopteryx okamurae to the potential of blue carbon as a driver of innovation and sustainability.
The opening session featured Jorge Gonçalves, Member of the Board of CCMAR; André Gomes, President of the Algarve Tourism Board; Mª Lurdes Carvalho, Director of the Regional Planning and Development Unit at CCDR Algarve; and Paulo Águas, Rector of the University of Algarve.
National Water Day
On National Water Day, OMA – Algarve Marine Observatory (CCMAR), in partnership with Águas do Algarve, organised an event dedicated to the importance of water and its role in a sustainable future.
The occasion also provided an opportunity to engage with Dr Hugo Nunes, Member of the Board of Águas do Algarve, and to reflect on the challenges and opportunities surrounding water management in the Algarve.
Ocean Governance Debate
On 10 November, we gathered at the CCDR Algarve Auditorium for an inspiring discussion on the future of ocean governance.
As part of the Algarve Marine Observatory (OMA.CCMAR), the event explored topics ranging from the global relevance of the BBNJ Treaty to the innovation of Marine Ecosystem Accounts as a tool for more informed decision-making.
We extend our thanks to the speakers — Carlos Morais Pires (European Commission), Sérgio Carvalho (Fundação Oceano Azul), Maria Adelaide Ferreira (IPMA), the President of CCDR Algarve, and Prof. Jorge Gonçalves (CCMAR) — as well as to all participants who contributed to the success of this third pre-launch event of the 1st Fórum Mar Algarve.
Science, businesses and municipalities came together to reflect on the future of the Algarve.
During the Biodiversity Credits training session, held in partnership with NBI, participants explored how to measure the value of nature, restore ecosystems with real impact, and prepare the region for the emerging European market for nature credits.
It was a day of knowledge-sharing, collaboration and vision, essential to building a more resilient and Nature Positive territory.
This event brought together a highly qualified audience of around 60 participants, including CCDR Algarve, APA, ICNF, municipal executives, technical staff, businesses, academia and strategic partners, in a space for interinstitutional dialogue and bridge-building.
Under the auspices of the International Day of Freedom, and with the support of NBI, the event aimed to strengthen community capacity around the potential of our biodiversity and promote alignment between public, private and scientific actors, which is essential for ensuring that future action benefits the region.
This gathering helped to broaden and consolidate an increasingly active community committed to sustainability and to building a more resilient region from an environmental, social and economic perspective.
The 1st Fórum Mar Portugal brought together partners, speakers and participants for a day of dialogue, reflection and shared commitment around the value of ocean sustainability.
This event marked an important moment for exchanging knowledge, perspectives and ambition, reinforcing the role of collaboration in shaping more informed and impactful approaches to the future of the ocean.
A special note of appreciation is extended to OMA.CCMAR Ambassador Vanessa Barragão, whose artistic contribution gave the Fórum a distinctive and memorable atmosphere.
The discussions, ideas and commitments that emerged from this gathering will now help inform future action, with the aim of generating concrete impact across public policy, science and ocean-related economic activity.
